What the Federations for American Immigration Reform Advocates

For many years now, the Federation for American Immigration Reform has been at the forefront of the national debate over what needs to be done about the current levels of illegal immigration. There are, of course, many people and organizations that disagree with FAIR’s principles, and until a complete resolution can be found, these debates will likely continue for some time. As FAIR continues to seek its own goals, though, it will become important to understand exactly what it is they currently advocate.
The Federation for American Immigration Reform has stated that their goals are to “end illegal immigration through enforcement of existing laws as well as the application of new technology,” and to “set legal immigration at the lowest feasible levels consistent with the national security, economic, demographic, environmental and socio-cultural interests of the present and future.” The issues surrounding illegal immigration are very complex, and accomplishing those stated goals will be very difficult, especially with so many other organizations that have different ideas on the best way to resolve the problem.
In simple terms, Federation for American Immigration Reform advocates enforcing our current laws fairly and effectively, finding a way to end illegal immigration by humane methods, and using no favoritism or discrimination against anyone, but that admissions should be based on reasoned, explicit population goals for the country. FAIR has also stated that there should be three criteria to select immigrants. According to fair, these criteria should be first, our fair share of refugees, with the ultimate resettlement as part of the program, second, our national manpower policy, and third, any concerns for reunification of nuclear families. There are a great many factors that will figure into the final resolution of the illegal immigration problem, and groups like FAIR will continue to be major participants in the debate.
